Uganda’s Internet Problem: Why Affordable and Reliable Connectivity Still Matters

The internet has become an essential part of everyday life in Uganda. From online banking and mobile money to education, business, entertainment and communication, millions of Ugandans depend on internet access. However, affordability and reliability remain major challenges, particularly for low-income households and people living outside major urban centres.

One of the biggest problems is the cost of internet access. For many Ugandans, buying data bundles regularly can take a significant portion of their income. This can discourage students from accessing online learning materials and make it difficult for small businesses to maintain a strong online presence.

Reliability is another concern. Slow connections, network interruptions and limited coverage can affect businesses that depend on digital services. A poor internet connection can mean missed online meetings, interrupted transactions and reduced productivity.

The problem also highlights Uganda’s digital divide. While people in Kampala and other urban areas generally have greater access to internet services, some rural communities still face limited connectivity and infrastructure challenges. Without reliable access, these communities can struggle to benefit from opportunities created by the digital economy.

Improving internet access should therefore be a national priority. Investment in broadband infrastructure, greater competition among service providers and affordable data plans could help more Ugandans get online.

Reliable and affordable internet is no longer a luxury. It is an important part of education, economic growth and social development. For Uganda to fully benefit from the digital age, internet access must become faster, more reliable and affordable for everyone.
